How to Be A Rational Sports Fan

For decades, sports have brought together people from all over the world regardless of their age, gender or ethnicity, to inspire and unite everyone. In Nelson Mandela’s words: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope, where there was once only despair.” 

 

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), which takes place annually on 6 April, presents an opportunity to recognize the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and in people’s lives across the globe. 

 

Although the existence of sports events is to promote peace among different entities, things can turn sour if hard-core fans are acting irrationally. 

 

Today, we will discuss some important points to keep yourself rational while watching sports games to enjoy the fullest. 

 

Focus On The Game

 

The entire meaning of watching sports games is to observe the movements and the strategies that athletes use. The moment a game starts, we should put away our prejudice and focus on the game itself. 

 

Accept Defeat

 

In every game, there is a winner and a loser. Accepting defeat becomes much more simple when you actively consider that everyone loses at some point or another. It is human to be disappointed when things don't happen the way you want, but accepting it and moving forward is key. 

 

If the team or player that you support doesn’t win, it’s ok to be disappointed. However, it will be better if we observe how the other party wins and learn from them. 

 

Do Not Let Anger Controls You

 

Sometimes, the opposing party may use tactics that you deem cunning to win. You can release your anger by talking to family and friends about the event, however, do not lash out on social media.
