Knowledge Worth Spreading

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, said, “A good teacher is like a candle—it consumes itself to light the way for others.”

Teachers are an icon of knowledge. They are one of the most influential forces for quality education and development.

They are a source of awareness and enlightenment. They nourish their students with their wisdom. They teach the real skills of a successful life to children.

Every year on 5th of October, people around the globe celebrates World Teachers’ Day to appreciate all the educators in the world.

This day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

The Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching personnel in higher education. World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994.

The pandemic has definitely brought huge effects on the teaching profession. Although online classes are not new in this era, it was not the mainstream way of conducting classes. Therefore, adjusting and adapting into the new norm is never an easy task for educators. However, many educators have stepped out from their comfort zones to overcome the challenges.

They deserve respects and a round of applause.

Besides appreciating and admiring the contribution of educators, it is also important to remind ourselves not to be stingy in sharing knowledge, ideas, and skills. This is simply because, the best way to master something is to teach it.

It only makes sense that you will work harder to understand and be more aware of the material you are teaching, whether you know it or not. You will be forced to really dig into the “why” behind whatever you are teaching and use it yourself until it becomes completely natural.

What’s more, you will feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when you see your “students” succeed, even if it is something as simple as using a new word you showed them. Become a teacher in your own way and don’t be afraid to do it. It only brings benefit to both you and the person you are helping.

Therefore, be it at school or at work, let’s share your knowledge generously with your friends or coworkers. Let’s be a teacher and start enlightening people around you!
